This Custom GPT provides realistic interview practice and personalized coaching to help former teachers confidently transition into instructional design roles. By translating classroom experience into corporate-friendly language and refining interview responses, users leave each session feeling more prepared, confident, and ready to succeed.
Many transitioning teachers struggle to translate their classroom experience in ways that align with instructional design roles- especially during interviews. Without guidance, it’s easy to feel unsure about how to speak the corporate learning language, reframe transferable skills, or respond confidently to common interview questions.
I created a Custom GPT that simulates instructional design interviews through realistic role-play and personalized coaching. Users can choose to practice answering general ID interview questions or tailor their session to a specific job they are preparing to be interviewed for.
This tool is adaptive and empathetic. It listens to user needs, helps reframe teaching experience into corporate language, supports portfolio presentation, and even asks smart follow-up questions based on user's previous answers.
The result? Users walk away more confident, better prepared, and interview-ready.
I built the first version of this project quickly, but it lacked the personal, supportive tone I wanted. So I kept refining it. I tested it constantly, tweaking the tone, flow, and feedback to make it feel more realistic and helpful.
One of the biggest turning points was realizing just how much the experience depends on strong, intentional prompting. Every interaction, question, and response is shaped by the quality of the prompt behind it. I spent a lot of time crafting and refining these prompts to make sure the GPT could guide, adapt, and respond like a supportive coach. With each iteration, the experience became more personalized, more intuitive, and ultimately something I was proud to share with others.
One resource that was especially helpful to me was this video by Devlin Peck, where he explains the importance of structuring a Custom GPT and shares a practical template to get started.
The screenshots below offer a partial look at my instructions, focusing on the structure of the prompting logic.
I've shared this Custom GPT on a professional Instructional Design Community, full of transitioning teachers. The response to this project has been incredibly encouraging so far. Many users shared that they plan to keep using this tool as part of their interview prep. They appreciated the safe space to practice, receive feedback, and build confidence before their real interviews.
For me, this project is a reminder of how powerful it is to build tools that don’t just give answers, but really support people where they are and help them grow with confidence.
