This e-learning concept project allows learners to master key sales techniques.
By making decisions in realistic scenarios, learners can see how their choices impact sales, client satisfaction, and long-term relationships.
This project focuses on a large fictitious premier chain of cosmetic clinics known for offering innovative beauty treatments and high-quality skincare products. Sales staff are not effectively upselling, cross-selling products, and handling customer objections. This leads to missed opportunities to increase the average transaction value and overall sales.
I created a story-driven, scenario-based e-learning experience to help employees improve their skills in upselling, cross-selling, and handling objections. Many employees struggle to identify customer needs, recommend the right products, and address concerns effectively due to a lack of training. This scenario-based approach allows them to practice these skills in a risk-free environment, boosting their confidence, and helps them take the right actions during real customer interactions.
I followed a structured approach to the project, starting with an action map to define key behaviors. Then, I created a storyboard and designed vector visuals, ensuring everything stayed consistent and aligned with my vision. Next, I built an interactive prototype, refining it through several rounds of feedback. Finally, I fine-tuned the project based on the feedback to ensure it met the intended goals.
Creating the action map helped me focus on designing for behavior change- focusing on what people need to do, not what they need to know. It ensures that every action supports the goal of the project.
After creating the action map, I developed a storyboard to outline the flow of content, ensuring the story, interactions, and visuals aligned with the learning goals. This approach helped identify any gaps and maintain consistency. My goal was to fully engage learners in the scenario, showing the consequences of their choices and the impact of mistakes in the workplace. To guide them, I introduced a mentor character who provided support whenever needed.
Once my storyboard was approved, I started creating a mood board for inspiration and designing a style guide to keep the project visually consistent. Then, I gathered vector images and edited them in different graphic design softwares to create a cohesive look. I refined the assets and made high-fidelity mockups to bring the design together with more detail and precision.
The next step was importing my high-fidelity mockups into Articulate Storyline 360 to add interactivity. I exported my assets from a design mockup tool and added sound effects to enhance the user experience.
In Storyline 360, I used animations and a learner-chosen avatar and name, making the experience more personalized. These elements were combined into Storyline to create a fully interactive prototype for testing the design’s functionality.
After gathering feedback from my interactive prototype, I used it to make improvements to the final product. I looked closely at the feedback to find areas that needed changes, like design, functionality, or content. I updated the interactions, improved visuals, and made sure the flow was smooth and easy to follow. This feedback helped me refine my project, making it more effective and user-friendly. The final version turned out much better thanks to these changes, creating a more polished and successful learning experience.
“I love your design in this project - the color scheme works great for the topic. That the learner gets to pick their avatar and give it a name is a really cool addition. I also really like the black screen with white text for transitioning. (...) The whole experience is super impressive!” (Lisa S.)
“It’s cool how you use sound and movement throughout the project to imitate characters walking. I thought it was effective how my decisions impacted the reviews of the salon that mentioned my name specifically.”
(Julia B.)
“You have a wonderful project here! I’d echo the compliments on color scheme, user personalization choices, and your use of sound and movement. I also love that your typography choice matches the expensive feel of the beauty clinic. (...) The avatar style is a great fit as well!” (Amanda P.)
What truly made this project successful was my commitment to listening to and applying feedback early and often. From the very beginning, I made sure to stay organized and on track, understanding that feedback is crucial to refining any instructional design. I actively sought input throughout the process, sharing my deliverables with a community of instructional designers. This iterative approach is essential in instructional design, because it allows for continuous improvement and ensures the final product meets the needs of the learner. By collaborating with peers and incorporating their insights, I was able to create a more effective, engaging, and user-friendly experience.
